Unicharm Group's Initiatives to Reduce Environmental Impact
in Conjunction with World Environment Day on June 5

Unicharm Corporation (President and CEO: Mr. Takahisa Takahara) announced its medium-to-long-term environmental goals, "Environmental Targets 2030," and its medium-to-long-term ESG goals, "Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030," in 2020. The entire group is engaged in activities to conserve the natural environment. In conjunction with the World Environment Day on June 5, we would like to introduce some of these initiatives.

About the World Environment Day

The World Environment Day is an International Day of Commemoration established by the United Nations in 1972 to raise awareness of the conservation of the natural environment and to promote educational activities. It is a day to encourage individuals to work on environmental conservation activities together with governments, individuals, and community organizations.

Launch of Organic Cotton Sanitary Napkins Using Bio-Based Materials for All Components

Biomass materials*1 such as sugarcane waste, botanical oils, and natural resins, which had previously been discarded, are used for all components of the product. This reduces the amount of petroleum-derived plastic used and creates environmentally friendly products.

※1:Environmentally friendly new materials made from biomass or biomineral raw materials.

Repurposing Package Waste into Bags by Weaving

Waste resources generated at our own factories and packaging companies are recycled into bags using the weaving techniques of rural women in India. Approximately 50 pieces of package waste are reused per bag, contributing to reduced environmental impact and job creation.

【The Hartz Mountain Corporation】(United States of America)

Promoting Environmentally Conscious Manufacturing

Our own factories have acquired 100% Renewable Energy Certificates and have reduced power consumption by converting all lighting to LEDs. In addition, approximately 30% of the products sold use recycled materials. We are also promoting other environmental initiatives and have released the following video on our website:

【LG Unicharm Co.,Ltd.】(South Korea)

Reducing Plastic Usage in All 'MamyPoko' Packages

By changing the thickness of the packaging film, plastic usage has been reduced by approximately 20%. This is expected to reduce plastic usage by approximately 1 ton per year.

【UNICHARM (PHILIPPINES)CORP.】(Philippines)

Adopting Recycled Materials for 'Sofy Natural Love' Packaging

By using recycled materials for packaging, waste is reduced, and the use of virgin petrochemical plastics is reduced by approximately 50%.

【United Charm Company Ltd.】(Taiwan - Greater China)

Donating Seedlings Based on Employees' Walking Steps

Employees who walk more than 5,000 steps a day are given 1 point, and when 200 points are accumulated company-wide, one seedling is donated to the habitat of endangered birds. Approximately 130 employees have participated so far, balancing nature conservation with improved health awareness.

【Unicharm Corporation】(Japan)

Establishing Technology*2 to Utilize All Materials from Used Paper Diapers

In 2015, we launched the "RefF*3 Project" with the aim of recycling used paper diapers. Paper diapers are mainly composed of three materials: pulp, plastic, and super absorbent polymer. In 2025, we established a technology*2 to recycle super absorbent polymers and utilize all three materials. The "RefF Project" has been developed into various products and applied to materials such as educational paper clay.

*2: Technology that enables the recycling of all three materials (pulp, plastic, and super absorbent polymer) that mainly compose paper diapers.

*3: RefF is an acronym for "Recycle for the Future." We are working to realize "consumables that are not consumed," which are essential for realizing a sustainable future, and are working on recycling used paper diapers as part of this effort.
