Voices from Real-Life Experiences

At the evacuation shelter, infectious diseases were spreading, and we—parent and child—were constantly anxious.

Inside the house was a complete mess, and I felt utterly overwhelmed. Still, I wanted to stay in my home, and spent several days cleaning it up.

It was really tough not being able to flush the toilet during the water outage. I realized how important it is to have an emergency toilet kit ready.

Make Circulating Stockpile a Habit

Rather than enduring disaster as an “abnormal situation,” aim to maintain a lifestyle as close to normal as possible. Stockpiled items aren’t just for emergencies—they’re part of everyday life. Use circulating stockpile method:

1. Buy extra supplies regularly

2. Use them as needed

3. Replenish what’s used

This ensures you’re always using familiar items, even during a disaster. Also, check expiration dates regularly.

※Note on Unicharm products: Many hygiene items do not list expiration dates, but unopened products typically last about 3 years depending on storage conditions.

Maintaining Hygiene During Environmental Deterioration and Water Outages

During a disaster, your home can instantly become so cluttered that it’s difficult to walk through, and cleaning up takes significant time and effort. Outside, the streets may be filled with rubble and dust, creating harsh conditions. To reduce physical strain, it’s important to prepare items like masks and cleaning supplies to maintain hygiene.

Water outages may prevent bathing for several days. Stock up on wet wipes and other items to keep your body clean.

Boost your Disaster Preparedness!

Assume that the toilet may not be usable during an emergency, and prepare an emergency toilet in advance.

For use as an emergency toilet

By placing an opaque plastic bag over the toilet bowl and adding paper-based cat litter, you can create an emergency toilet. The litter has high absorbency and deodorizing effects, making it highly recommended. Additionally, burnable types of cat litter can be disposed of as combustible waste, allowing for easy cleanup. Pet sheets can be used in the same way.
