Unicharm, Deloitte Tohmatsu, and NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS
Establish New Working Group within GX League
~Aiming to Achieve a Decarbonized Society and Sustainable Economic Activities~
Unicharm Corporation (President & CEO: Mr. Takahisa Takahara), Deloitte Tohmatsu Consulting LLC (Representative Executive Officer: Mr. Yusuke Kamiyama), and NTT DOCOMO BUSINESS Inc. (President & CEO: Mr. Katsushige Kojima) are pleased to announce the joint establishment of a new working group within the framework of the GX League, led by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).
The new group, titled “Working Group for Green Market Creation through Mid-Level Emitting Enterprises” (hereinafter referred to as WG), aims to balance the realization of a decarbonized society with sustainable economic development.
About the GX League
The GX League was launched by METI in 2023 as a collaborative platform for companies committed to accelerating Green Transformation (GX) in anticipation of achieving carbon neutrality* by 2050 and driving societal change.
Participating companies are expected to lead innovation, build sustainable business models, and develop environmentally conscious markets through concrete projects. By working together with other companies, academia, and government entities, they contribute to the transition toward carbon neutrality* and the creation of a sustainable future.
*Carbon neutrality refers to balancing greenhouse gas emissions with absorption. Over 120 countries and regions, including Japan, have declared their commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
Background and Purpose of the WG
Achieving carbon neutrality* requires the development of markets that enable sustainable economic activities. To this end, it is essential that environmentally conscious products and services are properly evaluated and selected. A reliable and transparent system for communicating environmental value to consumers and markets is urgently needed.
However, current frameworks lack clear standards and common guidelines, making it difficult for individual companies to address these challenges alone.
This WG was established as a platform for mid-level emitting enterprises to collaborate in identifying and solving shared challenges. Through discussions focused on practical implementation, the group aims to lay the groundwork for diverse industries, including light manufacturing, to engage proactively and sustainably with the green market.
Scope of Discussion within the WG
The WG will focus on the light manufacturing sector, including consumer goods, and explore ways to balance green market development with sound economic activity.
Key areas of discussion include:
・Defining and visualizing environmental value at the product level, a key driver of GX
・Effective communication strategies to engage consumers
・Establishing third-party verification systems to ensure credibility
Additionally, a Sub-Working Group (SWG) titled “Exploring Data Distribution Models” will be formed under the WG to examine the feasibility of primary data sharing between suppliers and manufacturers in the light manufacturing sector.
The WG and SWG will actively seek participation from companies and organizations of all sizes and industries that support their mission, aiming to build a more sustainable and effective framework through industry-wide collaboration.
