Background of Entry into the Indian Pet Care Market
In recent years, the pet care market in India has been expanding rapidly, driven by rising income levels from economic growth and the deepening cultural shift toward the "humanization of pets" (treating pets as family members). Demand is rising particularly fast for pet food and pet toiletries, with the market size projected to double by 2030 compared to 2025. Considering these trends, Unicharm views the Indian market as a vital region for driving further growth in its pet care business, which has been designated as a "growth driver" under its 13th Medium-Term Management Plan.
In May 2026, Unicharm announced its entry into Brazil, one of the world's largest pet markets, through the acquisition of the Brazilian pet food manufacturer Nutrire, as a wholly owned subsidiary. The expansion into India is part of this ongoing effort to accelerate global expansion and strengthen the company's business foundation in high-potential emerging markets.
