Unicharm has been selected as a CDP 2024 "Supplier Engagement Leader"

Unicharm Corporation (President and CEO: Mr. Takahisa Takahara) is pleased to announce that it has been selected as a "CDP 2024 Supplier Engagement Leader" by CDP (Headquarters: London, UK), an international non-profit organization focused on environmental issues.

About CDP

CDP (formerly known as the Carbon Disclosure Project) is an international non-profit organization established in the UK in 2000. CDP focuses on environmental issues such as climate change, and requests major companies and cities around the world to disclose information on how they are addressing climate change, water management, and other issues, and conducts research and evaluation. Its activities and research results are highly valued by institutional investors around the world.

About SEA

SEA (Supplier Engagement Assessment) is a system by which CDP evaluates how companies engage with their suppliers in addressing climate change and promote initiatives such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the supply chain. The evaluation items include governance, Scope 3 emissions*1 management, target setting, and collaboration with suppliers.

Our Initiatives

We have formulated the mid- to long-term ESG goals "Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030," and have set a total of 20 key initiatives, indicators, and targets, with 5 each in the four areas of "Safeguarding the well-being of individuals," "Safeguarding the well-being of society," "Safeguarding the well-being of our planet," and "Unicharm Principles."

Among these, we are promoting the following initiatives around "Safeguarding the well-being of our planet."

・ To proactively address climate change, we prioritize reducing our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. To contribute to the framework of the Paris Agreement, we received SBT 1.5°C target certification from the SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative) in October 2024 and are advancing reduction activities.

・ Under the "Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030," we have set a goal to achieve 100% renewable electricity usage in our business operations by 2030. Toward this goal, we are promoting the installation of solar power systems and the procurement of renewable energy certificates at 26 plants in Japan and overseas. As of now, 14 of these plants have achieved 100% renewable energy usage.

・  In collaboration with CDP, we aim for “Zero plastic waste, Zero CO2 emissions, and Zero deforestation of natural forests” by 2050. As part of our 2030 environmental goals, we have set specific targets for addressing plastic issues, climate change, and responsible sourcing to avoid contributing to deforestation, and we are actively working toward achieving these goals.

・  To reduce GHG emissions across our entire value chain, we have established GHG emission calculation guidelines based on the international “GHG Protocol*2.” We obtain primary data on emissions by material type from major suppliers of raw materials, enabling more precise and timelier CO₂ emission calculations. This will lead to the disclosure of product-specific Carbon Footprint (CFP) information.

・   We utilize Sedex*3 to manage social and environmental issues within our supply chain. As of the end of December 2022, we have established relationships on the Sedex platform with suppliers accounting for approximately 80% of our procurement value, using the platform for various risk assessments.

We will continue to strengthen our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in pursuit of a low-carbon society.
