Unicharm Strengthens India Presence with Completion of Ahmedabad Plant
Unicharm Corporation (President & CEO: Mr. Takahisa Takahara) is pleased to announce the completion of its Ahmedabad Plant (Gujarat, Western India) at Unicharm India Private Limited, a local subsidiary in India. The plant will be operational from February 2025. The Ahmedabad Plant had been damaged by a fire in 2020 and has been under reconstruction. This will be the third production site in India, ensuring a more stable supply and enabling the company to provide products and services that meet local needs.
【Unicharm’s Ahmedabad Plant】
Unicharm established its Indian subsidiary in 2008 and subsequently inaugurated the Neemrana Plant (Rajasthan, Northwest India) in 2010 and the Sri City Plant (Andhra Pradesh, South India) in 2015. In 2018, the company further strengthened its production system by establishing the Ahmedabad Plant. However, due to fire damage in 2020, the plant underwent reconstruction and has now been completed as a new facility in 2025. This enhancement allows Unicharm to fortify its production and supply framework in India, enabling a stable supply of products to a wider customer base.
India, with approximately 23 million annual births, which is about 28 times that of Japan, and a total population exceeding 1.4 billion, represents a massive market poised for further expansion. Guided by its corporate brand essence, "Love Your Possibilities," Unicharm remains committed to contributing to the well-being of Indian society and the realization of a cohesive society.
A Cutting-Edge Facility Prioritizing Safety and Sustainability
Unicharm has formulated its mid-to-long-term ESG goals, "Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030," which emphasizes “Addressing Climate Change” as a key issue. The newly completed Ahmedabad Plant focuses on reducing environmental impact. It also incorporates cutting-edge fire prevention measures to significantly enhance safety.
◆ Enhanced Safety Measures
- Introduction of advanced fire protection equipment to mitigate fire risks.
- Adoption of a multi-building factory structure to improve the fire resistance of the entire facility, minimizing damage in the unlikely event of a fire.
- Reinforced employee fire drills and comprehensive safety management system to elevate disaster preparedness and safety awareness.
◆ Environmental Initiatives
- Introduction of a Dehydrator system to efficiently separate and compress moisture in wastewater, enabling effective solid and liquid waste treatment.
- Securing 35,000 square meters of space for future solar power generation facilities to expand the use of renewable energy.
Through these initiatives, Unicharm aims transition to 100% renewable energy for its business operations by 2030, actively contributing to the realization of a sustainable society.
A Cutting-Edge Facility Prioritizing Safety and Sustainability
Unicharm believes that the Ahmedabad Plant project aligns with the following 17 goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
7. Affordable and Clean Energy
12. Responsible Consumption and Production 13. Climate Action
We will continue to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by solving environmental and social issues through our business activities, including the provision of products and services.
