Unicharm Indonesia Collaborate with Government,
Lecture “Separation of Garbage” to Elementary Students

Unicharm Corporation (CEO & President: Mr. Takahisa Takahara) subsidiary in Indonesia, PT Uni-Charm Indonesia Tbk (Hereinafter as Unicharm Indonesia) is pleased to announce that we have conducted a class on “Separation of Garbage” for elementary school students in the Jakarta Special Region in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia.

Background of this Event

Due to recent economic growth, the amount of garbage in Indonesia is increasing year by year*1. Indonesia's largest waste landfill, located in West Java, processes approximately 7,000 tons of garbage per day, and the landfills in Bali and Bandung each process approximately 1,400 tons.

In addition, most of the waste brought to the final treatment plant is not sorted, and in many cases is not recycled. Due to this increase in waste and the lack of widespread recycling, the amount of waste brought to the final disposal plant is increasing every year.

In response to this situation, we held an easy-to-understand class for elementary school students in Jakarta Special Region on "separation of garbage" to encourage them to think about environmental issues.

≪Our activities in Indonesia to address the garbage problem≫

・In 2019-2020: Conducted river cleanups three times in Mojokerto, East Java, near our plant.

・In 2021: In July, we began experimenting with the reduction of used disposable diapers, using the example of food waste disposal using larvae of the Black soldier fly, as a guide.

Content of the “Separation of Garbage” for Elementary School Students

To help elementary school students understand the importance of separating and disposing of trash, we developed content (videos, materials, etc.) with easy-to-understand explanations by our ambassador, "Poco-chan".

<Contents>

・Explanation about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 17 Goals

・Reason why disposing garbage on streets are prohibited

・Regarding 3R (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle)

・About garbages that can be composed

・The importance of separating garbage

After the class, all students received a "Poco-chan Notebook" made of recycled raw materials. In addition, each student in the class wrote down on the white board "garbage reduction activities to be undertaken" and shared them with everyone. We will continue to promote this activity to contribute to the "Sekolah Sehat (Healthy Schools) Campaign"*2 set forth by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology of Indonesia.

Comment by Unicharm Corporation Executive Officer,
PT Uni-Charm Indonesia Tbk President Director Mr. Yuji Ishii

Our Purpose is the realization of the SDGs, and are actively working to solve social and environmental issues through our business activities. We recognize that most waste, including plastics, can be properly collected and disposed of in an appropriate manner to reduce environmental impact. We believe that it is important to gain a foothold in promoting the 3Rs (Reuse, Reduce, Recycle) by giving children a solid understanding of "separation of garbage," which is the gateway to this proper waste disposal.

We hope that this activity will provide an opportunity for the children, who are the future leaders of Indonesia, to think about how they can protect the environment. We believe that this kind of steady activity will lead to the reduction of garbage.

We will continue to expand our coverage area and conduct similar activities in other areas to contribute to garbage reduction.

Contributing to the 17 SDGs through “Separation of Garbage” education in Indonesia

Unicharm believes that the activity of “Separation of Garbage” will contribute to the following goals of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.

4. Quality Education          12. Responsible Consumption and Production

We will continue to contribute to the achievement of the SDGs by solving environmental and social issues through our business activities, including the provision of products and services.
