Unicharm made inroads into the Chinese market in 1995. As you know, China is the second largest economic power in the world and it is the most important market for Unicharm. Business in Chinese shows high growth rate and the number of cities we made inroads into exceeded 1,000 in 2013. We will act all together as a solid team and continue to deliver "comfort" to all consumers throughout China.
The overseas operations of Unicharm began with the establishment of a local subsidiary in Taiwan in 1984, so we feel a very strong connection with Taiwan. Currently, Taiwan has the No. 1 position in baby care business, feminine care business, and health care business. We have a warm relationship with our Taiwanese staff who are like family.
Unicharm Thailand was the second local subsidiary established in 1987, following Taiwan. Unicharm Thailand has the number 1 position in baby care business and feminine care business and "MamyPoko" and "Sofi" brands are highly adopted in the country. In addition, another characteristic of Unicharm Thailand is that female employees play active roles!
With the largest number of population of about 230 million in ASEAN, Indonesia is expected to see great market growth along with economic development. Unicharm Indonesia was established in 1997 and the overwhelming market share has been obtained in the baby care business represented by the innovative product "MamyPoko Pants Standar". In addition, we are promoting employment of women in a wide range of departments, from sales to production. With many active employees, Unicharm Indonesia has energetic and bright corporate culture.
The local subsidiary in Saudi Arabia was established in 1992. In the country where teachings of Islam are rooted, Unicharm launched a factory limited to women only in 2012. Since then, the company has been promoting the creation of job opportunities and socialization of women. In addition to these activities, we are expressing our participation in a global initiative which is called "Business Call to Action (BCtA)" through business activities that provide sanitary products.
Unicharm India was established in 2008. It is said that there are 5,100 cities in the superpower that is making a rapid economic growth with a population of more than 1.2 billion, so it is not easy to achieve penetration of Unicharm products in the country. However, since the penetration rate of disposable diapers for babies and other sanitary products is still low, we continue to make efforts to improve the living standard of consumers.
In 2014, we started production at our own factory in State of Sao Paulo, Brazil to release disposable diapers for babies. The target population of disposable diapers for babies is about 8 million in the country, which is nearly 3 times higher than Japan. Furthermore, Brazil is an attractive market that continues growing with the increasing size of the middle income group. The local subsidiary in Brazil is a new one, so future progress is expected.
